The Yellow Ring

I’ve written at least two posts regarding Alexa echo.  One mentions how we’ve separated the two by referring to them as Emily and Stacy (here) and the first post about the two colored rings that appear when voice activated. But there is a also a third color which appears by itself on occasion.  That circle is yellow in color and will provide notifications at random.  The last six were in reference to the weather as a storm is in the midst and has been for the last couple of weeks – though we haven’t seen the storm.

Currently it is pouring – HARD- hard like the first rain we had encountered at Newport April 2015 (here).  I tried taking Bonnie for a walk.  I was okay with the rain falling down, but she was not.  Needless to say our walk was the shortest walk yet – perhaps the length of ten houses and back. I like the sound of rain.  I like the green grass.  I don’t see a storm. Some MC residents believe that there will be snow on the ground tomorrow.  I have my doubts.

Alexa Has Attitude

Jenna's rough drawing of what Echo
and "Attitude" might appear as icons

I think I have created a couple of posts in which I refer to Alexa.  We have two, an echo and one built into the sound system for the TV.

Jenna had won the echo two and a half years ago when we had gone to Salem for an open house for the online school that Roland works for.  We kept it over the fireplace for over a year before Roland purchased a new sound system for the television.  He had a choice of making it Okay Google or Alexa”.  I told him to go with “Okay Google” so the two wouldn’t both activate at the same time but he chose not to listen to me and go with Alexa and moved the Echo into Jenna’s room.  But her room is too close and both would activate – at least simultaneously.

We now have the Echo in our room and have an alarm set to go off at 5:15 each weekday morning. Our room is located right next door to Jenna’s and so often both will activate (depending on who is making the request) though there is a four to seven second delay.  Usually the information is exactly the same but sometimes the Echo provides more interesting or need information whereas the one built into the speaker has attitude.  I kid you not.

Jenna has tried drawing what she thinks in her mind – the echo is a helpful student (probably kindergarten age as Alexa had said she was five years in age) while the speaker seems more like a teenager irritated about being interrupted while she is on her cell phone.  There have been times that she has flat out refused to respond.  That isn’t nice.  But seems to fit her personality.  How can an “Alexa” device feel so much different from the other.  Jenna and I like Alexa Echo but do not care for Alexa the other.

Circle Colors

Is it possible that the elements could be so cold that the signal for internet is lost?  The outside has gotten below freezing between 1:00 and 5:00.  Jenna, who has gotten up as early as three (strange child) was trying to sign up on the internet yesterday and was frustrated with it not coming up. If she couldn’t get on her devise (which she would seriously give up for non-electronic entertainment) I wasn’t even going to bother trying mine.  Mine has been having problems ever since Roland received a new updated computer from his work.  It must be sucking up more signal or something.  That isn’t fair.

As Roland was toying with Jenna’s device, I got up and checked the status on the box.  One light was solid green, one light was blinking green.  One light was blinking orange.  The other two were out.  I mentioned that it was probably the internet – and the last time we had encountered that problem it was not so much a household thing – but all of Myrtle Creek had been affected (it must be really great for people living in the sticks).

The TV had been turned to the news.  It would be cold all day in Eugene, so bundle up.  Eugene’s whether doesn’t always mirror Myrtle Creek.  I didn’t figure it would do a lot of good to ask Echo as Alexa is on the same power as the internet – yet I knew I wouldn’t be able to pull the forecast upon the internet.  Either Jenna or Roland asked, “Alexa, are you working”

The red glow came on and she apologized that she was not working but to try again later.  Jenna than made a comment about the friendly blue that is received when Alexa (or Echo) is working but referred to the red color as the circle of death.
