Happy Anniversary BTW

              On Friday we took Jaime to Ashland

and left her there at the college.

That was the day of Richard and my

21st wedding anniversary.

Initially I thought we would

stay in either Ashland or Medford overnight

and go to the temple yesterday morning.

                                        Plans changed.

When we returned we started a deep

cleaning of her room and the

office which are now become my

oldest son and his wifes room and my

grand-daughters room. 

So much work! 

Not the ideal way I wanted to spend my

anniversary.

It may be a while before I can post again.

Holidays and Brain Out




          Valentines Day is a non-Federal holiday full of traditions and legends which may or may not be true.  There were at least two, perhaps three, patron saints who bore the name St. Valentine.  Their lives ended in tragic massacres; perhaps it was the way they lived that got the Valentine’s celebration started.  There are many websites to choose from when “Valentines” is the subject entered into a search engine such as Google.  I have never been much into the Valentine spirit.  The concept behind Valentine’s Day seems noble enough, but the commercialism is what keeps the holiday alive and I could do without that.  No one gets off of work or school in honor of Valentines.

           President’s Day was created in honor of George Washington, first president of the United States.  President’s Day was initially established on February 22, 1885 in honor of his birthday.  President's Day is a Federal holiday - which means most governement businesses, banks, and schools are closed on Presidents day.  In 1971 the date was changed to the third Monday in February.  This was done as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (see here

I had accepted an assignment that put me with kindergartners and first graders on Valentine’s Day.  The first graders surprised the aides when we were invited to play a trivia game to test our knowledge of George Washington.  Each time we answered correctly, we would get a point.  If we answered wrong, the children would get the points.  I thought it fairly easy as all of the questions had multiple choice – though I either hadn’t been aware or agreed with the answers as being correct – like the cherry tree incident I learned to be a myth.  Or that his teeth were not made out of wood but ivory – however ivory was not one of the listed choices.

I don’t remember how many questions there were.  Two of us answered all of our questions correctly.  One answered a couple incorrectly and one I think got only one right.  The aides won.  Later on that day I helped set up for the Valentine party.  I passed out the punch.

We had a three day weekend and did not return to school until today.  I had picked up an assignment to work today as well as Thursday and Friday.  I had accepted the assignment yesterday.  Oh my word, I was soooooooo sleepy.  The fact that I was sitting in a middle school math class was not helping in the least.

Way too early for my brain to convert anything.  So glad NOT to be a student today.  The second class was more of the X Y chart but now introducing Z.  My brain hurt.  The instructor played this YouTube video.

Next was a prep class.  The instructor wrote a paragraph about a blizzard in the “maintain” and some other misspelled word – no punctuation.  I didn’t know if it was intentional so that the class would correct whatever they happened to write.  But they had to have three paragraphs.  It was definitely interesting. 

Only one recess was required with the schedule I had done on Friday, but the schedule I am doing this week has me outside three different parts of the day.  Though recess is not my favorite, I do enjoy this schedule overall.  But today was fricken cold and I never did get warm or felt awake.  I think I’ll be going to bed early.

Catching Up on Some ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZs


I was on my computer Tuesday morning when I received a call from one of the schools.  It was 8:35 and the shift started at 9:00.  It was for the school that is farthest away, but I thought I could be there on time.  At that point I didn’t know if I’d be working with the elementary or middle school age children.  I wish it had been the older kids instead of the younger ones.

I was over my sore throat but still had that darn dry cough, and because I was using my voice all day (except for recess) my cough became stronger and my throat started hurting again.  I did not work yesterday.

The RS presidency meets once a week.  Initially they met on Monday but had changed it to Wednesday to accommodate me.  I don’t particularly enjoy working on Wednesdays as it is the short day and school lets out at the same time I get off.  I’d rather not deal with school traffic – which I don’t on any other day.  If I know there is not going to be a meeting, I can accept an assignment.

After the meeting, Roland and I drove up to Roseburg to see the movie “Ad Astra” – what a waste.  I really liked “Space Cowboys” made almost 20 years before the release of “Ad Astra”.  Did not care for “Ad Astra” at all.  For one thing, the light fading in and out on the screen bothered my eyes.  Sitting for more than one hour and twenty minutes was killing my behind.  I finally got up just to go to the bathroom and check the snack bar for something that might help my throat.  Didn’t find anything, but it was worth a shot. 

Then I heard my stomach growl.  I was hungry.  I wanted real food – not candy or popcorn.  They sold hot dogs for 5.50.  5.50!  Flip! I would have gone elsewhere, but none of the nearby locations sell any kind of food.  There was a half hour left until the movie let out.  I ordered a hot dog.  It took 15 minutes just to make the dang thing.  Can you imagine? Good thing there were no other patrons standing in line – well, there was no line.  I was it.  Everyone else was in the theater.

I can’t believe everybody sat through it.  I didn’t hear anyone say it was good or they liked it.  I had only seen one other person leave before it ended.  Roland didn’t like it.  He should have left sooner and come out and found me. 

Today I am going to the coast with a friend.  I am not even going to bother looking for work today.  I told Roland that I would, but I don’t want my throat to start aching again.  I think being closer to the ocean today may assist in my healing.  Let us hope so anyway.

When the day presents a 30 or 40 degree jump


I did not sleep well Tuesday Night/Wednesday morning
Amazingly I got cold and Roland woke up hot
Yesterday I woke up with a dry cough
Gradually it turned into a sore throat.
I have been sleeping with the windows open
even just a crack
except for the last two nights.

Yesterday after school I loaded myself with 
Musinex, Flonaze, Vitamin D3 and Chamomile Tea.  
I also broke out the humidifier.
I slept great
Up until 4:00 in the morning.
I took more Musinex
I tried closing my eyes but
wasn’t sleeping.
Now I’m writing this post.
I hope I can stay awake for the next eight hours. 
I have to leave for work just
under three.
This week I’ve been working with
the middle schoolers.
Both schools.
Yesterday I was sore. 
So sore.
My soreness grew throughout the day.
I don’t want to be sick!!!!
If I don't post for the next three days 
I'll be in bed trying to fight this.

a Final Assignment

I found the following assignment still in my files.  I remember submitting it to the writing center.  The person giving me feedback suggested I lose this first line - which I do tie into my closing statement.  As I recall, even my instructor had said it was a poor way to start out a paper.  It is called an attention grabber.  The idea was suggested to me by the dean of the English department.  I can't remember whether I stuck to my guns or not.  I think I did but did not receive full credit.  Ironically, I was not stressed about it.

            There are many things that cause stress such as relationships, finances, health issues of loved ones, not being able to meet deadlines due to heavy traffic, power outages or other elements .  In this assignment I will focus on stress in the workplace (Cause, 2019).

            Work situations are different for each of us.  I will not be able to cover them all, but allow me to provide some examples. Employees that work in sales may feel pressure from a manager who has a deadline to meet.  Those who work in fast foods may feel tension as they deal with unsatisfied customers.  Bosses may get upset with staff members who do not show up for work or put forth their best effort to perform. Dealing with faulty equipment such as a broken copy machine or a computer that is not getting internet may also contribute to stress.

I have fulfilled many temporary job assignments working for companies that rely on one or more employment agencies. There have been cases when a business seems short-staffed due to illnesses, vacations, or other reasons. These companies may take the opportunity to negotiate a contract with an agency that will send out employees to assist with a variety of job situations. 

One of the first temporary assignments I had accepted was with a government agency near my home.  My job description was locating files for case workers in the department of child and family services or DCFS.  I did not mind the work.  I enjoyed being a floating agent as different workers at DCFS were able to utilize my skills in several areas and teams. I was happy with being a temp as I would have not enjoyed being an employee of DCFS.  I saw many workers who felt stressed by case loads, paternal issues, and placement. 

I remember an entire team evacuating the building less than a week after I had started.  Their team had been transferred to another building located in different city. If I had been a part of that team, I would not have gone.  Location is a high priority with me.  I noticed that DCFS seemed to move their employees with less than a 24 hour notice.  I do not know who was responsible for moving teams. That would have stressed me out.

Though I have occasionally felt some tension with each job I have had, I do not recall feeling so much anxiety at work as I have felt on the commute getting there or returning home.  Many workers who live in large cities are already stressed before the workday even starts (Wener, 2003).  Daylight Saving is another stress factor that may result with the work stress.  Although it only happens once (twice counting back to standard) a year, it seems to have a negative ramification on many to perform tasks responsibly.  Just because the clock displays a certain time does not mean my body will agree with it.  In fact, many will feel sleep deprived not just the first day the clocks are set forward (or back) but several days following (Daylight, 2014). Thus in addition to stress, one may also experience fatigue. The time change does not affect only those in the workforce but those who attend school regardless of what stage or grade they are in.

            I have seen people risk both their physical and mental health due to stress.  Overeating, raising one’s blood pressure or cholesterol are not ideal stress relievers as they are harmful to the body.  It is best to pause and take some deep breaths or to go for a walk to clear the mind when the tension seems overbearing (Stress, 2013). Stress effects the emotions or the amygdale part of the brain.  It may also harm the hypothalamus, a part of our brain which commands our nervous system and involuntary body functions (Understanding, 2018).

            There are many different stress relievers.  Some may be as simple as lighting a candle or chewing gum.  Some stress relievers may be more mindful such as writing about what ails you (Jennings, 2018).  I favor the journal and blog method as it is a great outsource for me.  It also helps to be able to laugh at a situation (Neis, 2019).  My brother and I created several posts about my mom and make comments about everybody involved with her care as she had dementia.  We would often write with humor in order to focus on the positive.  We were living in a sitcom at times. My husband laughs at frustrating situations all the time and it really is quite helpful.

            Allow me to refer back to my opening quote. We all experience turbulence in our lives. We need to keep in mind that we need to control the stress before it controls us.  Eventually we will all make it to the sea.  May we do so by letting go of harmful stress.

Tired and Frustrated

My laptop gets internet
My PC does not
No cloud communication
For quite a while now so
What’s the point?

I started a two-week assignment
January 31 to February 13 –
And I’m still there

A few have asked if I can work
For them
I said “Yes” to one and the boss asked
If I could work longer

Yesterday I had others ask if I could work
May and June.  Their boss (our boss) said “No”
She wants me to continue with the
Assignment I started in January

I have to give a speech this week for
The only class that I am taking right now
I am so glad there is only one.
It was tough taking two classes with work
I know many people work full time and go
To school full time.  I think I
Could handle it once
Not anymore.

I wish my PC was more vibrant
I wish the screen on my laptop was bigger
I wish my house would clean itself

This is a boring post and I
am drained.

Spring Break is Near Its End



            Spring break is over for Jenna.  Her cousins don't need to return to school until Wednesday.  I gave Jenna the option of staying home today, but she doesn't wish to ruin her perfect attendance.  Plus I think she is wanting a break for the chaotic noise level that has been a part of our house for the last four-going-on-five days.  That's right, Bill and Kayla brought their three children for a spring break visit.  I didn't even tell Jenna - which I'm glad, as I had my dates wrong and had expected Kayla a lot sooner thinking her children had the same amount of spring break that Jenna did.

            Funny thing, Jenna had asked if I would take her to the library on Thursday - which actually happened to be a part of my agenda - thinking that her cousins would be here already - but they were actually due to arrive that very day.

            I drove Jenna to the library so that she could paint a flower pot and hoped that Bill and Kayla would be able to meet us there.  We pulled up to the library at exactly 12:34.  Upon seeing the numbers lined up in order, Jenna told me to make a wish.  I said I wished some family member could be with us.  Our wish came true after 3:00.  I have much to post about and seven titles saved in drafts.  Only one class this mod, so hopefully I will be able to make the time to add details to the titles and post them.

            Roland is now back at work.  Bill has to go to Roseburg for an unexpected expense involving the car (another post) and my plan is to take Kayla and the kids to the library for story time and then we will have a picnic and drive around.  I'm tired.  I need to get dressed.  See that Jenna gets off to school.  She has talked Bill into taking her.

Historic Eagles Lodge: Eagles' to Equitable to Bay to Historic Landmark?


          The first location of Salt Lake's Equitable Life and Casualty was housed in the old Eagle's lodge building on 4th South and West Temple. According to this website Roderick Ross had established the company in said location in 1948.  The building itself did not seem the ideal for the insurance business - at least not with the Eagle's Lodge floor plan. Perhaps in the late 1940's it didn't matter that the building contained skinny stairs and a balcony, but it seemed quite inappropriate in the 1980s.

          My dad had been hired as a computer programmer.  I think he used a different entrance to the building than the majority of workers.  On occasion I had opportunity to visit him at his place of work. As a child I remember seeing parts of what I believed to be the basement.  My dad worked with one those huge wall-to-wall computers  (or maybe several) that may have well taken up the majority of the basement.  It is the break room that I remember most.  I remember tables were set up and at least two different vending machines.  One was quite tiny and offered tiny bottled drinks that cost a dime.  Another machine offered cigarettes.  I don't remember seeing any other part of the building until I was employed there myself.

          Good grief! What a mess! I remember the file cabinets were located on the balcony.  The layout of the office space had not been planned.  File cabinets were added and continued to crowd the already closeted feeling workspace.  I remember looking out over the floor below the balcony thinking how everything seemed disarray and congested.   


The building itself may have been a prime location when it housed the Eagles or even when the Insurance Company took over. However, the neighborhood  itself had seemed to go downhill - even with the Sheraton Hotel owning property just beyond the building on the corner. 

          There was a building sandwiched between the Equitable building and the Sheraton parking lot.  I don't know if it had a name.  Most people unfondly called it "Bum Motel" as there were many residents that seemed to lack ethics and made a habit of getting drunk.  I recall dad coming home from work one time to report that a drunk had fallen out of the window and landed on somebody's car.  The drunk was so intoxicated, he was able to walk away.  The car was severely damaged. I was told that Ross' had tried to buy them out and had speculated that Sheraton had tried to buy out the owner as well, but the owner wouldn't budge.

          I had not worked at said location for long.  The company moved to a much nicer building, nicer location and much bigger parking lot.  The building that had once housed the Eagles and then Equitable was eventually purchased by a company that turned it into a dance hall of sorts.  It was called "The Bay".  I remember having gone there just one time.  It appeared that the structure must have been gutted out an rebuilt. As I recall the interior did not remotely resemble the building I had been familiar with several years before.


          The outside still looks the same.  I don't know if  it is currently occupied or not.  This site says it is a historical landmark. I found this picture on google map



From the outside, the building looks the same as it did in 1948.  The picture I had used in this post didn't appear to have ownership either but contains advertisement to put your name here.  I don't know if it was advertized on the building itself or just the photo that I used.  The Google picture doesn't have a name on the building.  I have noticed at least two other vacant buildings during my search.

          I also learned that 400 South is now called University Boulevard - which I guess could have been its name for the last twenty years.  I didn't realize it had been given that name until I started doing research for my assignment. It was probably named so after UTA started using the trains.  The building seems like it would be a good location as it is  next to TRAX (Utah's extended public transportation) but still may not be the greatest part of town.  I don't know this for sure. I'm not there anymore.
