3 Days in St. George

bottom two photos found on this site: https://churchof
jesuschristtemples.org/st.-george-utah-temple/news/

We spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in St. George where Kevin and Tara have been living the last year or so. They had been living near Buffalo, New York when we saw them in 2020.  Archer had been born on Jai’s 16th birthday.  He was three months at the time we saw him last.  Now he is almost two and has a baby brother born 2/22/22 which was on a TWOsday.

Richard made breakfast each day we were there.  The first day he made french toast with bacon and eggs and Kevin made tater tots. I did some laundry on our first day there.  Jai had hoped to go to Arctic Circle sometime during our travel as she has fond memories of having gone while living in Utah.  We went to one in St. George.  I dont think anyone was impressed with the food.  Afterward we went to the Alumni Creamery a chapter of BYU creamery.  That was good.  I have missed BYU creamery chocolate milk.

Kevin wanted to play pickle ball with Richard and had taken us to a pickle ball court but it was extremely windy and we weren’t there for very long. I didn't know that the wind blew in St. George. The next day Kevin took us to Pioneer Park where we climbed rocks.

I would have loved seeing more of this; Thank
you Aaron D. Adams for the eagle project

Apparently I wasn't ready for the tackle of the climb

Kevin and Jaime crawled in spaces while Richard and I held back with Archer.  We also toured Brigham Youngs winter home in person (I had toured it myself virtually just last year; this post

We ate at a place called Hawaiian Grill and had dessert at Nelson’s frozen custard.  I have not had a lot of frozen custard in my life, but have always enjoyed it.  I wasnt disappointed.

Richard and I had been put up in the room next to Archer’s.  He was having a rough night our third night there.  I had gone into his bedroom to see if I could calm him down.  I would sing to him – which seemed to work, but then he would cry again whenever I would stop.  Finally Kevin offered to take over.  He fell asleep in the rocker holding Archer.

Tara was the one who normally slept in as the baby kept her up, but on Thursday she got up and let Kevin sleep in after his rough night with Archer. We went to Smiths market place as I was in need of some toiletries and something to sooth my dry throat. Jaime and I both had dry coughs and she had nose bleeds as well as the air in St. George does not offer the same amount of moisture as western Oregon which is why we moved initially.

Wed gone to the Dinosaur museum and temple visiting center.  The temple was closed due to renovation.  This is the original.  We also passed by a second temple that is being built in St. George.

Our Time in Ashland

Jenna had been accepted to Southern Oregon University which we toured on the 19th. We had invited Jennas friend Kylee to go with us. We had to have proof of vaccination or else a negative result on a last 24 hour test.  I thought Kylee would have had that already but was not able to get either in time for our tour and so ended up not going with us which is really too bad.  I think she would have enjoyed it.

We arrived in Ashland very early in the morning.  The elements were dark but there were buildings lit up with Christmas décor.  It was as though Ashland embraced us with welcoming arms.  It was so beautiful and inviting.

We had arrived early and thus able to get a decent parking spot in front of the admissions building which is where the event started.  Those in charge admitted us into the building so that we would not freeze as it has been cold outside.  Im pretty certain that we were the first registered for the orientation/tour package.

A breakfast bar had been set up for all of the participants.  We enjoyed scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy and fruit before the morning orientation, separating the students from family members and going on tour.     There was a scavenger photo contest presented for whatever students had desire to participate which of course Jenna did.  Here are some of the photographs that she took:

The theatre didnt seem to offer a separate course as some of the other departments and so we ended up with the digital cinema.  I enjoyed seeing the work of some of the students as they presented footage and talked about some of the challenges that they had.

We ate lunch.  There were a variety of options.  I selected a build it sandwich as there was no line.  Jenna selected pizza which looked good but was the worse tasting pizza either one of us have had.  I enjoyed the sandwich though.

After that we toured the housing area.  Jenna seemed comfortable with being able to live there which she may end up doing.  We had gone to the library as she had a question for the admissions with the theatre department but the library only offered the basic admission and had set up computers for that.  On our return to the Stevenson  Union building we met a senior majoring in theatre.  She and Jenna swapped information to keep in touch.  I thought that was cool.  Very impressed with how friendly everyone was.  Jenna will fit in well.

Our last stop was at the financial sources and then return back home.  It is only about an hour and a half from where we live.  I like that she will still be close enough to visit.  And she does already have at least two friends who attend.  Guess we will have a better idea where she will be going within the next four months.

Not Exactly a Free For All

There was frost on

the ground and so

were the chickens.

I dont understand the draw.

The roosters have

gotten brave enough

to approach us.

They will look at us

in the same manner as

Bonnie asking,

Why dont you feed me?

At least Bonnie has an

excuse to look at us

that way.

She has been placed

in our care after all.

The fowl are all trespassers.

They are not our responsibility.

I have seen their owners

feed them but evidently we

have better grass, better

bugs, better vittles somehow.

The roosters have discovered

the bird seed carelessly

fallen to the ground

knocked over by greedy

birds eating from the bird feeder.

Roland thinks it is his

job to feed all of

the stray animals except

for the deer.

The fowl are welcome

in our yard.

The deer are not.

Right now we don’t

have anything that

the deer would be

interested in.

The fowl are

welcome to eat

all the bugs they want.

The garden food is

for humans.

Other animals are

not to mess with

our garden.

A Domestic Goddess, I am NOT

After we had picked pears in Medford for the Church, we gleaned about four bags of pears for us to take home.  Roland took 24 pears to give to friends he had made at the theater, and  I took 18 to my friends.  Most of the pears were not ripe at the time.  We continued to pass them out to neighbors until they became too ripe.  It got to the point where we needed to do something - such as pear sauce or pear cake or something.  I made pear sauce last week.

Roland is the one who loves to bake and cook.  I was disappointed that he didn't do more of it during his time off.  I prefer not being in the kitchen for a huge length of time.  But Roland has returned to work and more than just the pears have ripened - but bananas as well.  In addition to our ripened fruits, Jaime and I had picked two buckets of apples - which Roland cored and I cut yesterday.  We're currently drying some apple rings and have put the rest of the pieces (5 1/2 gallon bags full)  of apple pieces probably for pie.

This morning I baked one loaf of banana bread and started on a pear butter recipe that my neighbor had given me.  She had also given me a sample of the heavenly deliciousness.  Exhausted with my morning workout in the kitchen, I decided I needed a break and went to the pool to relax - or at least attempt to.

The pool was a nice temperature, but there was a light wind that made the air too cool for the wet skin to enjoy.

When I returned home, half of the banana bread was missing, and I decided I would have a slice with Maxine's pear butter (as I had not finished making my own).  I had to fourth the recipe as it called for about 15 pears (I would assume enormous ones) which would add up to about 8 cups of pulp.  I had only 11 pears, 2 unusable, and not many in which the entire cup could be used.  I barely had 1 cup of pulp and 1 cup of juice combined.  I had left it in the refrigerator while I was at the pool.  I think that helped, for when I returned, I used the strainer once more and barely had two cups of sauce.

I followed the recipe as best as I could.  I was appalled with the tiny amount.  It reminded me of having the juicer and getting only one or two ounces out of 20 apples or whatever else was used.  I had to put a drinking glass in the photo so as

Maxine's nearly gone, mine in the middle is mine did not fill an entire marachino jar.

to prove what a tiny amount it was.

Jenna and I have been putting the pear butter on what's left of the banana bread.  Delicious.  Still a lot of work though.
