A Hire Freeze?

Image
There has always been economic growth and layoffs, outrageous prices and cutting costs.  It was in 2008 when Shelly started a seasonal job at Target.  She worked on Black Friday and was laid off.  Are you kidding me?  What was the point?  2009 didn't offer the turnout that Target had expected.  Apparently it was the one day that would make or break the rest of Christmas line-up.  It broke.          The following year Richard also landed a seasonal job with Target.  I reminded him about the experience that Shelly had had the year prior. Each had  been hired for the Christmas rush.  He had only worked a week or two and Target realized that their numbers of sales were not even close to what it had been years before.  He was let go as were several others who had been hired to work the Christmas season.  That was weird.          Hopefully...

Closing Our Economy

Jenna used to return home from school by 3:15.  That seems eons ago as she often doesn ’ t get picked up from high school until 3:15 or later.  There has always been a shortage of drivers – but especially this year. The few bus drivers are given multiple routes now. Short staffed employment is common all across the nation.  Diners and other companies go out of business. Contractors are behind on their jobs as truck drivers are behind on delivering products that so often seem to not even exist anymore.           Hospitals will never go out of business but they are short staffed also.   Schools are hurting for instructors.   It makes me wonder where our economy has gone.   It isn ’ t solely COVID that ’ s to blame.   I am so grateful for those that have sustained a positive attitude among so much negativity.   I am grateful to those who have...

Back to the Drawing Board

Roland’s boss had told her staff – “whoever has vacation coming up, take it now.”            Roland took off the last weekend in July and returned on Tuesday.   Meanwhile he received an email from the school that everyone outside of Utah will be laid off on September 6.   It’s not a big surprise for us.   We have known for some time that he could be laid off any day now.   At least now had an idea of when.              Roland returned and worked a day and a half when his boss asked if he had any sick leave.   Roland told her yes and she told him to take them off starting then.   Monday was his first day of sick leave and his last day of employment.   Everyone was let go.   So now what?            To be honest, he seems a lot more worried tha...
